The combination of manufacturing, housing, and transport meant that Ancoats developed into the world&#8217;s first industrial suburb. In 1842, the bee was officially incorporated into the city&#8217;s coat of arms. It came to symbolise the hard work of the locals, their cooperation, and the &#8220;hive of activity&#8221; that propelled Manchester to become a global leader in textile production. Back then, factories were often called &#8220;hives&#8221; due to the constant hum of machinery and the bustling workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fittingly, bees also made an appearance on the city&#8217;s main civic building\u2014the Town Hall. It was built when Manchester had already cemented its status as an industrial powerhouse, which is why the interior features numerous nods to trade, science, and manufacturing. The symbol took on an even deeper meaning after the tragic terrorist attack at the Manchester Arena in May 2017. The bee emblem became a powerful public symbol of unity and defiance against terrorism. It appeared across the city on graffiti murals and protest banners. Standouts included the &#8220;I Wanna \u2018Bee\u2019 Adored&#8221; bee, inspired by The Stone Roses, and the &#8220;Hac \u2018Bee\u2019 Enda,&#8221; which paid tribute to the city&#8217;s 1990s music <a href=\"https:\/\/manchester-trend.com\/en\/eternal-1616-the-royal-exchange-a-unique-history-of-the-manchester-theatre\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/manchester-trend.com\/en\/eternal-1616-the-royal-exchange-a-unique-history-of-the-manchester-theatre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">culture<\/a>. The Central Library&#8217;s foyer got its own worker bee, while Sylvia\u2014a bee named after the famous suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst\u2014took up residence in the train station concourse. Meanwhile, the &#8220;Love Bee&#8221; sits proudly at Manchester Cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the Manchester City Council protects various designs of the bee as a registered trademark. The city&#8217;s mascot also features in Christmas installations and contemporary art projects.
